Rights Respecting School
We are proud to be a Silver Award Rights Respecting School, recognised by UNICEF for our commitment to promoting children’s rights throughout everything we do. This means that our school is a place where every child’s voice is heard, valued, and respected. We work together as a community to create a safe, caring, and inclusive environment, where children learn about their rights and how to respect the rights of others, helping them grow into confident, responsible citizens.
Below, are the rights that we focus on as chosen by our democratically elected Rights Council.
Article 13 – freedom of expression - Every child must be free to express their thoughts and opinions, and access all kinds of information.
Every year a Rights Council made up of Key Stage 2 children is elected by their peers. They are the voice of our children and find ways to make school life at Alma Park even better.
Article 14 – freedom of thought, belief and religion - Every child has the right to think and believe what they choose and also to practise their religion, as long as they are not stopping other people from enjoying their rights. Each year, as a whole school, we celebrate Eid and Christmas with children and parents with feasts and fairs.
Article 23 – children with a disability - A child with a disability has the right to live a full and decent life with dignity and, as far as possible independence and to play an active part in the community. Alma Park is one of two schools in Manchester that have Deaf and Hearing Needs resource provision. All children at Alma Park learn some British sign language.
Article 28 – right to education - Every child has the right to an education. Discipline in schools must respect children’s dignity and their rights. Our new restorative behaviour policy reflects our compassionate ethos where children are listened to.
Article 31 – leisure, play and culture Every child has the right to relax, play and take part in a wide range of cultural and artistic activities. As well as half-termly school trips for every class, Alma Park has a fantastic Summer Fair open to the whole community. There is food, games, art and much more.
