Manchester Art Gallery and Emmeline Pankhurst statue

Lesson: Art and design

Class: Year 2 Year: 2025 - 2026

This week we visited The Manchester Art Gallery. We met an artist called Sam and she showed the children how she created her artwork by looking at opposites. The children looked at three paintings in the gallery to see if they could spot any opposites, like light and dark, fire and water or endings and beginning.

Then they used paint pens to create their own pieces of art, stickers to add depth and then used threading skills in the piece as Sam uses all three skills when creating her own artwork.

We also did a self-guided tour of the art gallery and sketched our favourite pieces.

Before we headed back to school, the children used their placards and protest marched to the statue of Emmeline Pankhurst just like the women would have marched over a hundred years ago.
