Modern Foreign Language
Bonjour et bienvenue sur la page Française !
Modern foreign languages teaching at Alma Park Primary School aims to introduce children to an additional language which fosters curiosity and deepens children’s understanding of the world. When learning another language, children access ideas and experiences from other cultures and communities, which in turn encourages children to have an understanding and appreciation of diversity in society.
Children learn to communicate in speech and writing and respond to the speaker’s thoughts and ideas. We aim to provide the foundation for further learning of languages.
At Alma Park, we celebrate language learning and have a large number of pupils who are linguistically bilingual. Foreign languages spoken within the school include Urdu, Arabic, Punjabi and Italian. The Modern Foreign Languages curriculum reflects our school’s local context by providing our pupils with linguistic skills that they can use and make connections within their own languages.
Years 1 to 6 have weekly lessons in French, using the ‘Catherine Cheater scheme’.
The national curriculum for languages aims to ensure that all pupils:
- understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources
- speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, through discussion and by asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation
- can write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt
- discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied
